Welcome to Cowdenbeath Karate Club

English Cumbrian Open Championship

2 members from Cowdenbeath Karate Club were successful in the recent English Cumbrian Open Championships held in Penrith, one of the UK's biggest open karate tournaments with over 600 entries from all from Britain and Ireland .

Jack Sneddon won the under 18 title after many hard fights beating Scottish Internationalist fighters on the way to this prestigious title . Jack has been training with the Cowdenbeath club for ten years and the 4/5 nights a week training paid off , with jack finishing second in the Malta Open and the Scottish Grand Prix in recent weeks also..

Club mate Ben Smith won a bronze medal in his section despite all his opponents towering over him and gave a very spirited display in all his bouts.

The Cowdenbeath club also sent out a very strong senior team but lost out to the English Shotokan squad in a count back after never losing a fight but excessive contact resulted in them losing out .

The Cowdenbeath team was Chris Whyte ( capt ), Alan Goodwin, Mark Fitzpatrick, Nathan Sealey and Daniel Hodge.

Coach Gordon Maxwell commented  " all the fighters gave a great account of themselves  and can be proud of their efforts, against all the top groups in the UK notably SKF Meadowbank and the Sakai team from Kilmarnock. The club are embarking on a climb of Ben Nevis this week to raise funds for floor mats and we will be announcing a sponsorship tie up with the local restaurant and take away the  " Shimla Palace " who are keen to support youths from within our group which is a fantastic gesture  and we thank manager Kashiram Bhamdari for his support".

As well as sport karate the club also have classes for general keep fit and basic karate and is open to everyone. So if you really want to get in shape best idea is to enrol in a class. Cowdenbeath Karate Club is a non profit making organisation.

History of Cowdenbeath Karate Club

Cowdenbeath Karate Club was founded in 1977 by John Blakely and Tom Hynd.

The clubs first training hall was the former Kirkford Club in Cowdenbeath.  After a short period the club moved to the old scout hall and then to Beath High School in 1980.  It was at this point that 2 new members joined that would be significant to the clubs future, Harry and Gordon Maxwell.

Later Harry Maxwell left to live in Spain and another brother Neil Maxwell joined.
